Two South Koreans, 38 and 27, have been killed and several others were injured when a staircase and balcony on an upper floor fell inside a nightclub.

The incident happened at around 2 am (local time) at the Coyote Ugly club in Gwangju, 270 miles south of Seoul.

Reports suggest that 300 people were at the venue at the time, and around 100 were on the floor that collapsed.

Most of the injured were athletes from the World Aquatics Championships as the Coyote Ugly club was near the athletes' village.

However, as the structure collapsed in on itself and everyone was pinned down by its weight, it is difficult for local authorities to identify the nationality of who was injured currently.

Yonhap, a South Korean news agency, has reported that nine athletes have been injured - from the US, Italy, Brazil, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

The report suggested that the injuries were not severe.

The local authorities are currently investigating whether the weight of the floor which fell, was the reason for the incident.

They are also looking into whether illegal expansion and renovation from the club owners, could have been a factor.
