Record numbers of US tornadoes touched down on Monday, killing one and injuring 130 people.

Over 50 twisters (a colloquial American term for a tornado) arrived at the beginning of this week, spanning across eight states including Ohio, Indiana and Colorado.

Monday marked the 11th consecutive day with at least eight US tornadoes.

The last time such lengthy tornado activity was seen, was in 1980.

More than two dozen of those that were injured were admitted to hospital.

An 81-year-old man, in Celina (Ohio), died when a vehicle entered his house.

The tornadoes caused damage across the US, including numerous thick pieces of debris (preventing highway access), damaged homes and fallen trees.

Most of the destruction caused by the storm was reported just outside Dayton, Ohio.

Reports suggest that due to the unusual amount of tornadoes currently in the US, show no signs of ending in the foreseeable future.
