The first presidential debate which was aired yesterday, between President Trump and Joe Biden, tackled the issues of coronavirus, political histories and racial tensions in the country.

The 90-minute debate, just 35 days before the election, challenged each speaker in not only their answers to some of the country's most crucial questions but also if the demeanours of the opponents could be maintained during the personal attacks.

Audiences of the debate held in Cleveland, Ohio may have struggled to determine the stronger candidate due to the constant interjections from both Mr Trump and Mr Biden.

Both exchanged heated comments, Biden stating that "You're the worst president America has ever had, c'mon" and Trump saying: "Did you use the word smart? You graduated either the lowest or almost the lowest in your class".

When discussing their political history on dealing with health issues, Biden said: "A lot of people have died and a lot more are going to die unless he gets a lot smarter, a lot quicker" and Trump stated: "Well, you didn't do very well on swine flu. H1N1, you were a disaster".

Addressing the long-standing issue of racial discrimination and tensions in the US, when President Trump was asked if he would condemn the far-right, anti-immigrant and all-male group, the Proud Boys, the president responded by saying: "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by,"

Mr Biden concluded: "This is a president who has used everything as a dog whistle to try to generate racist hatred, racist division."

While the debate, the first of three, dealt with many significant topics, finding audible or even constructive answers may have been difficult for the one in 10 US voters who are still undecided as to who they will support in this coming November presidential election.
