President Donald Trump has paid no income taxes in 10 of the 15 years before 2016/2017, according to The New York Times says.

This was allegedly "because he reported losing much more money than he made".

During the year he ran for president and his first year in office Mr Trump only paid $750 in federal income tax, it was revealed in an article yesterday.

This was calculated by 20 years' worth of the president's tax records, which were obtained by the national newspaper.

The story also reviewed the tax returns dating back to the 1990s of President Trump's companies.

Mr Trump has called the report "fake news", adding that he "actually I paid tax. And you'll see that as soon as my tax returns - it's under audit, they've been under audit for a long time".

He said: "The IRS [Internal Revenue Service] does not treat me well… they treat me very badly,"

Alan Garten, the chief legal officer for The Trump Organization, said: "Over the past decade, President Trump has paid tens of millions of dollars in personal taxes to the federal government, including paying millions in personal taxes since announcing his candidacy in 2015,"

This report comes just days before the president's first debate against rival Joe Biden before the presidential election this November. Mr Biden has not yet commented on the findings of the report.

Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House of Representatives, stated that the report showed Mr Trump's efforts to "game the tax code and avoid paying his fair share of taxes".
