Trump is 2024 primary favourite, poll shows

According to a Politico-Morning Consult poll published today, Donald Trump is the Republican favourite for the 2024 presidential primary.

The poll showed that 54% of Republican voters said that they would back Mr Trump in the primary.

This comes just days after the former president's impeachment acquittal, where he was charged with inciting insurrection amongst his followers responsible for the US Capitol attack on the 6th of January.

Other Republican figures in the poll:

Mike Pence - 12%

Donald Trump Jr - 6%

Nikki Haley - 6%

Mitt Romney - 4%

Ted Cruz - 3%

Despite many thousands of Americans saying that Trump should be permanently removed from politics in other polls, the 57-43 Senate vote to acquit him means that he can run for office in 2024.

However, senior figures within the party, such as Mitch McConnell doubt Mr Trump's success at another national election.
