1) The Screen on the Green
Want to watch a movie? Want to try something smaller, a little more unique? Then take a trip to Screen on the Green on Upper Street, Islington. A single screen unique cinema which faces the Islington Green. It is one of the oldest running cinemas in the UK, and its current building was opened before WW1. The cinema offers a wide range of viewings and special events, such as film festivals, live Q & As, National Theatre Live performances and blockbusters. So instead of going to one of the bigger chains to see your favourite movie of 2018, why not try something a little different?
2) Exmouth Market
If you have a different appetite and would like the choice from a range of cultures, prices and flavours, then go to Exmouth Market. The Clerkenwell street often has up to 32 different outdoor stalls, each one varying in food, style and taste. And, if that was not enough, there are several colourful bars, cafés and restaurants that line the street. Famously, the street on which Exmouth Market relies on was used by Madonna’s directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom and the British comedy, A Private Function. Despite its deceiving façade, Exmouth Market has a lot of interest behind its stalls and its street.
3) Central Street Café
So continuing the theme of being more than what appears, enters Central Street Café. A community-based charity just off Old Street that strives not only to provide Fairtrade and organic produce within its stores but to take all its profits to feed the elderly members of the community. This unconventional café not only does good but tastes good. And with every 10th hot drink free for loyalty card members, it is a slight no-brainer.
4) Camden Passage
When it comes to gifts, you can always go for a card, some flowers and a cake. But if you are looking for something a little more sentimental, a bit more personal, go to Camden Passage. This Islington based street has every kind of shop you could ask for, from boutiques to vintage stores, from contemporary shops to petite restaurants, cafes and bars. So let this picturesque street with all its hidden treasures be your next stop in Islington.
5) Barnard Park
If you want to walk the dog or play some footie, why not visit one of Islington’s largest parks, Barnard Park. It provides for a diverse community with a wide range of views from Kings Cross to the West End. The vast open greenery is perfect for performances from local artists, history exhibits and picnics which the local community often organise. It is not every day that you can come across one green space that has so much culture bursting out of its hedges.
6) Regent's Canal
This delightful waterway passes Camden Market, antique warehouses, zoos, parks and famous bars. It is also home to an array of wildlife and narrowboats where people live, enjoy and do their businesses from, such as the regular waterbus service. It is an indispensable location for walkers, boaters and cyclists, that want to get away from the regular hustle-bustle of London City. Each tunnel reveals another cultural aspect of Regent's Canal whether it be local contemporary art or a narrowboat boutique bookshop.
As you can see there are no shortages of choice in Islington, everything to do and to see is up for grabs. Moreover, this list may not reflect all the best parts of Islington, but it is one of the best ways to start exploring them.
