This comes as the company conducts staff consultation in preparation to close two warehouses in Kent and in London, which would affect around 800 jobs.
Back-office, cash office and managerial positions are also at risk as Asda moves towards single multi-skilled colleagues, card-driven shopping and online grocery picking.
It is thought that around 5,000 jobs in total could be cut.
The push for online grocery shopping has increased and put pressure on Asda since the coronavirus pandemic impacted the UK.
Despite the thousands of positions at risk, Asda expects that most people will be transferred to the newly created jobs as the company wants to only come to redundancy as a last option.
