The Republican senator was spotted waiting and boarding a flight at Houston Bush airport to the Mexican tourist resort on Wednesday.

Mr Cruz later called the trip an obvious "mistake" and returned to the US the next day.

The Texas Democratic Party, since the news of Mr Cruz's trip has emerged, has called for his resignation.

This comes as millions of Texans endure blackouts, frigid temperatures, lack of water and around 20 people have died in the extreme weather conditions so far.

The freezing storm has also stretched Texan emergency services, despite this, Mr Cruz's team requested that Houston's police force to accompany the senator to the airport.

As the senator received swift anger from online users as photos of him at the airport and on the plane circulated social media, Mr Cruz said in a statement that the trip was only to accompany his children on the flight.

His statement's credibility has been criticised as reports suggest that the senator was initially due to come back at the weekend before changing his return flight to the 18th.

The outcry against Mr Cruz has only increased as Texans accuse him of hypocrisy. On Monday, the Republican senator urged the residents in the southern US state to "stay home" as the storm worsened.

This all comes as the Houston born and raised singer, Beyoncé, has teamed up with Adidas and Bread of Life to provide up to £1,000 disaster grants for those struggling in Texas.
