Mayor of Paris told she has breached the law by employing too many women.

The public service ministry has fined Anne Hidalgo 90,000 euros. She promoted 11 women and five men into senior positions in 2018, a move which allegedly broke the 2013 rule of gender equality in employment.

Ms Hidalgo's "feminist" recruitment saw 69% of the senior posts go to female appointees, while the 2013 rule has a quota of new employees, no more than 60%, being from one sex.

Ms Hidalgo, the first woman to hold the mayoral post, when announcing the fine in a council meeting, added: "This fine is obviously absurd, unfair, irresponsible and dangerous,"

She also added the continued lack of promotions of women in France and the subsequent need to readdress the balance within senior posts.
