A policeman has died after being shot at Croydon Custody Centre in south London.
The unnamed sergeant, who was allegedly just weeks away from retirement, was shot by a suspect who had been brought into custody, sources told the BBC.
After the shooting the male suspect, who has been detained for possessing ammunition was arrested on suspicion of murder, attempted to shoot himself on Windmill Road.
Reports suggest that no police firearm were discharged during the altercation.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the shooter was known to counter-terrorism police previously.
The Metropolitan Police Chief stated: "A murder investigation is under way and officers are working at several crime scenes to secure evidence and to establish the facts of what happened."
The Prime Minister posted his regards on social media. He said: "My deepest condolences go to the family, friends and colleagues of the police officer who was killed in Croydon last night."
