Hollywood star, Johnny Depp, denies his former wife, Amber Heard's accusations that he had been violent to her during his libel case against the Sun at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

In the opening day of a three-week trial, the 57-year-old actor admitted to drug-taking and excessive drinking but denied domestic abuse, that his lawyers referred to as "invented".

This case follows an article that the Sun published calling Depp a "wife-beater" based on allegations that Heard, 34, had made. The actress and model will give evidence for the newspaper and the case in the coming days.

In one statement given as a witness, Depp claims that Heard had on several occasions, reportedly punched him in the face. Another instance describes when Heard allegedly severed his finger by throwing a vodka bottle.

However, the publishers of the Sun, News Group newspapers, said in a statement that the description of Mr Depp as a "wife-beater" were "accurate and truthful". The statement maintains the accusations of their article, commenting that Heard was significantly beaten during her marriage to Depp, to the point that she feared "for her life".

The case continues.
