Christopher Pekney, 28, died on Sunday in Liberty when the device he was building for his gender-reveal party exploded.
His brother, Michael, was injured by the blast.
Although it is currently unclear what the device was, New York police are investigating the incident.
Deaths caused by gender-reveal devices are not unheard of in the US. On the 8th of February 2021, a 26-year-old guest, Evan Thomas Silva, was killed at a baby shower by a piece of shrapnel that flew from a gender-reveal cannon in Michigan.
Even in recent years, these devices that may be homemade or contain some kind of small explosive have caused catastrophic fires such as the incident back in late 2020 in California.
