France faces its second suspected Islamist extremist attack in two weeks and has raised the nation's terror level to maximum.

The most recent attack, which occurred on Thursday and lasted nearly 30 minutes, left three dead in the Notre-Dame basilica in Nice. Those dead included a 60-year-old woman, a sexton called Vincent Loqués and a mother of three known as Simone Barreto Silva.

The supposed attacker, Brahim Aouissaoui from Tunisia, was carrying knives around the church yesterday morning, stabbing and cutting the throats of visitors before being shot by police and arrested.

World leaders from the UK, the US, Egypt, Iran and even Turkey, have "strongly" condemned the attack and vowed to stand in solidarity with France.

Anti-terrorist organisations in France are investigating the incident and thousands of military personnel have been asked to guard schools and churches across the country from Monday.

Just under two weeks before Thursday's attack, a teacher was attacked outside a school in Paris. It is thought that the history teacher, Samuel Paty, had shown pupils a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad, from Charlie Hebdo, in a lesson on freedom of speech.

President Macron made a statement about the attacks, saying: "If we have been attacked once again, it is because of our values, our taste for freedom; the freedom to believe freely and not give in to any terror. We will give in to nothing. Today we have increased our security to deal with the terrorist threat."
