Father, who killed his baby by violently shaking her, has been jailed for seven years.

Joseph Ray, 33, admitted to the High Court in Glasgow that he shook his two-month-old daughter, Ava, when she starting crying which woke him up back in 2012, in their flat in East Lothian.

Despite being charged with murder, Mr Ray admitted a lesser charge of culpable homicide.

He described the moment as a "loss of control" when he was already feeling "overwhelmed and angry", according to his defence lawyer.

The lengthy process of the case coming to court was prolonged by the police's medical experts trying to determine how Ava actually died. Initial tests showed that her brain had been lacking oxygen and it was determined that blood clotting could have explained the injuries that the baby displayed. It was later concluded, that Ava had died due to a "head injury" from the incident.

While the 33-year-old has had no previous convictions at the time of Ava's death, it has since been discovered that he has been found guilty of two domestic assaults on Ava's mother, Ms Lauren Scott.
