The 'Borat Subsequent Moviefilm' released on Amazon Prime last Friday, had divisive reception.
Before the movie was released, which stars Sacha Baron Cohen as a Kazakh journalist with exaggerated and controversial views on race, the Jewish population and women, over 100,000 petitioned against it.
The second mockumentary film follows the initial movie released in 2006, with a broader focus on mocking ignorance, racism and political tensions in America.
However, both online and in-person protesters against the film say that the content insults Kazakhstan.
Baron Cohen's character, Borat Sagdiyev, is an antisemitic, sexist and Uzbekistan-mocking TV reporter, who is depicted as being a familiar personality within Kazakhstan.
This is not the first frosty reception that Borat has received. The first film, 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan', was sued by some of the people that featured in the movie, denounced by the Kazakh government and banned for being released across several Arab countries.
Despite this, the movie and the character of Borat have gained some positive opinions. The initial film earned, globally, over $260 million and won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a musical or comedy.
Moreover, the former Foreign Affairs Minister, Yerzhan Kazykhanov, said that the film had attracted tourists to the country and exponentially increased the country's output of visas.
The 2020 sequel addressed several topical and controversial themes including the coronavirus pandemic's impact in the US, President Donald Trump's administration, racial tensions within the US and the upcoming presidential election.
