Around eight people are dead and 24 wounded after an explosion in Lahore, Pakistan on Wednesday morning.

The blast took place outside of the Data Darbar shrine (the largest Sufi shrine in Southern Asia) at approximately 8.45 am (local time).

According to authorities, out of the eight dead, five of them were police officers.

Reports are unclear as to whether the explosion has damaged the shrine itself and whether it was the initial target. Authorities suggest that the police security vehicle outside the Data Darbar was the intended target.

No group or organisation has come forward yet to claim responsibility for the attack.

There is heavy police presence around the shrine, the targeted vehicle and the gates to the Data Darbar until officials can get a better idea as to how much damage has been caused.
