New prisons, in England and Wales, will have their barred windows replaced with strengthened glass to increase prison security and reduce contraband items entering prisons, according to the Ministry of Justice.

This architectural move has been prompted by a three-year government-funded project to encourage a sense of normality for those inside the prison.

Moreover, a Bath university study is researching into the idea of referring to prisoners as 'men or women' and for cells to be referred to as 'rooms', in an attempt to assist rehabilitating offenders to not re-offend.

This study is estimated to cost £600,000 of tax-payers funding.

Other suggestions of prison-life improvement include better education and training for offenders in order to create a more normal environment.
