According to Sabq, a court in Saudi Arabia has sentenced Loujain al-Hathloul, an activist, to five years and eight months in jail.

The 31-year-old women's rights activist has been found guilty of agitating for change and using the internet to harm public order.

Al-Hathloul has a month to appeal the decision.

She has been in custody since 2018, with several other Saudi activists who campaigned for women's right to drive in the country as well as lifting male guardianship legislation.

Some of these activists have been released and await trial.

Al-Hathloul's time in custody has included sexual violence and torture, according to rights groups.

Last year, the official authorities offered to release al-Hathloul if she provided a filmed denial of the accusations surrounding her arrest, her family has said.
