A woman from Slovenia was found guilty of purposefully cutting off her hand in an insurance scam.

Julija Adlesic, 22, and her boyfriend claimed that she lost her hand cutting branches, took out five insurance policies one year before the incident and they were expected to get over £900,000 in payouts.

She denies the claim that the incident was intentional.

In Ljubljana, the capital, the court sentenced her with two years in jail for fraud while her boyfriend will serve a three-year sentence. The boyfriend's father also received a one-year suspended sentence.

Last year, when Adlesic, her family and her boyfriend came to the hospital after the supposed accident, it was thought that the remainder of the hand that was cut off was left behind on purpose to ensure that the injury was permanent, the court found.

Despite this, authorities were able to recover the rest of the hand in enough time to sew it back on.

The prosecutors on the case said that they also found proof that the injury was done on purpose as the boyfriend's internet history in the days before the incident, revealed searches about artificial hands.
