Around 29 have died in an Islamic State (IS) terrorist attack on a prison in Afghanistan on Sunday.

The prison, located in Jalalabad had over 1,000 prisoners trying to escape during the attack. A number of them remain missing, and over 50 were injured during the incident.

It is not clear whether the motive of the attack was to free certain prisoners as it was discovered that most of the inmates within the complex were IS and Taliban fighters.

Car bombs exploded at the entrance of the prison, on the final day of the ceasefire between the Afghanistan government and the Taliban.

According to a Nangarhar province spokesmen, in a 20 hour battle against the terrorists, eight of the attackers were killed. Despite this, no official figures are suggesting how many prisoners died during the attack.

The Nangarhar region is no stranger to attacks such as these, earlier this year, 32 people were killed at a police commander's funeral by a suicide bomb.
