Infection rates for coronavirus are seven times higher in English and Welsh universities compared to the rates within local cities.
This comes as Sheffield University, Birmingham University and Manchester University recorded rates of student infections that were at least five times higher than those of local communities.
According to a Guardian analysis of ten of the largest universities by population in England and Wales, COVID-19 data, correct as of the 9th of October, found that eight of these universities had higher student infection rates compared to the total population of the cities which the universities were located.
While this analysis is not an indicator of an increase in spreading of the virus, it does raise concerns of the possible outbreaks spilling into local authorities.
A spokesperson for the Department for Education said: “Universities are prepared for a local outbreak, and we have worked with them to help draw up plans for measures in the event of positive cases on campus, or a rise in cases locally.”
